Offering its numerous customers not just durability and design, but quality craftsmanship, comfort, and an excellent price.

A Brief History of Thorogood

thorogood boots for working

Thorogood shoes have been around for a very long time. But not as long as its parent company Weinbrenner Shoe Company. Under the administration of Albert H. Weinbrenner, who has been assembling footwear since 1892.

The Weinbrenner Shoe Company came into existence in 1900, and the Thorogood brand followed in 1918.

Excelling in the craft of footwear, the United States Army made Weinbrenner a major contributor of boots during WW1.

After the war and a few years later in 1938, The Weinbrenner Shoe Company began its craft in safety footwear. True to their word, they have become one of the giants in the boot-making industry.

Reviewing Thorogood Boots From Various Aspects

Looks (Rating: 4/5)

thorogood logger boots

When you look at any Thorogood boot, one might suggest that the shoe-making company had two options. Make Thorogood boots beautiful or long-lasting, and I believe we both know the answer to that.

The rugged-looking boot features a triple stitch that runs from the vamp to the backstay, three sets of eyelets that lead to three separate hooks, then to another on top.

On the rear is a branded Thorogood logo and on the toe is a noticeable little flag. Underneath is the MAXWear wedge outsole built for durability. To complete the look is the rear pull loop multi-colored boot laces.

Sizing and Comfort (Rating: 4/5)

I would suggest you get either your running shoe size or a slightly smaller one. Accounting for if you wear thick socks and slight stretch as well.

I recommend selecting the wide option (EE) over the standard (M) width option if your feet are wider than normal.

This is because the Thorogood boot runs slightly narrow yet remains true to size.

The Thorogood boots feature a dual-layer removable foam insole called the Thorogood’s Ultimate Shock Absorption Footbed and Comfort Cushion. Inclusive is the flexible wedge outsole and high-quality leather to provide you the maximum comfort you deserve.

Break-in (Rating: 5/5)

thorogood work boots

Yes, it’s true. The Thorogood boots break in but it all depends on how long you wear them and how many times you do so.

It takes about 5-13 times of wear to reach its break-in period. Although the leather looks rough and strong at first, you do not need to worry.

All you need to do is walk around in them to the mall, school, construction site, or even a stroll around the block. Do that a few times and believe me, it will soften up especially at the ankle.

Leather and Care (Rating: 4/5)

Although the leather on Thorogood boots can hold their own for as long as possible. It would be best if you clean them once it gets dirty for a fresher and healthy look.

Exposing your boots to direct sunlight, rain and other factors due to being left outside will wear them out quickly. To care for them, you’ll need a clean rag, warm soapy water, possibly a toothbrush (not the one you use every morning though), and boot oil.

Use the clean rag and warm soapy water to clean off the dirt on the boot. If you notice buildup in the welt area, it’s better to use the toothbrush. Allow it to dry and apply the boot oil. What remains is to wipe out the excess and leave them to dry overnight.

Outsole (Rating: 4/5)

Best for most surfaces even when wet, the Thorogood boot features the polyurethane Maxwear wedge as its outsole.

Able to handle anything you throw at them, I would recommend not using them as ice or snow boots for they are not waterproof.

With time as you use the once white outsole will get discolored picking up residues from whatever you walk on. Not to worry, you can scrub that off to get closer to a new state or use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to get a finer finish.

Construction And Durability (Rating: 4/5)

thorogood wedge boots

Made for workwear professionals, the Thorogood boots are highly durable. Featuring the Maxwear wedge outsole, these boots are oil and slip-resistant.

Built to last long, they can withstand being covered up in the mud, beer, sawdust, and paint spills, and even power sanders going astray.

All you need to do is clean them up and they are as good as before the incident occurred. Even if you are a construction worker, it would take at least 4 years of continuous damages to these boots to require a resole or a change.

Value (Rating:5/5)

Over the years, the Thorogood boots have shown their exquisite value in the market and the hands of their users worldwide. Been sold at a price tag of $165 – $180 a few years back.

And today for $214 – $285. The durability also comes into consideration here. Lasting longer and not requiring unnecessary repair, the Thorogood boot is an investment worth your time and hard-earned money.

Overall (Rating: 4.5/5)

A comfortable, durable, adaptable, and timeless boot. Delivers when you need them to and doesn’t disappoint. If you are in search of a quality work boot, The Thorogood Boots holds what you seek.

How to Get the Best Fit of Thorogood Boots?

Getting the perfect fit of Thorogood boots depends on how you want to use them and if you have issues with your feet. Here are some elements to put into consideration when selecting the best fit either online or in a physical store.

Is it lace-up or not?

Most unlikely to be considered but important. You need to test if the lace-up styles will discomfort you when you wear them.

To check if there is enough room for your toes, take out the insoles. There should be about a quarter-inch space in front of your big toe when you stand on it.

Also, lacing up longer boots right up against the leg will cause discomfort to your calves.

Is it pull-on or not?

Just like checking if it’s lace-up or not, you need to check how your foot gets into the boot. All you need is gentle pressure to push your foot into the boot.

If your foot slips easily or needs to be forced into the boot, go for another size.

Steel, Metatarsal, or Composite safety toe?

It all depends on your intentions with the Thorogood boots. Either working at a construction site, deep in the woods hunting or hiking, or just a fashion statement. You can choose the option that suits you perfectly.

Thorogood Boots vs Redwing Boots

These two companies are giants in the footwear-making industries. Offering their clients a collection of masterpieces. Who produces the best quality boots has been one of the most debated topics. Both companies have made some wonderful products and it would be best if they settle this score on a product that unites them in ideas.

Of course, that would be in the aspect of their Moc Toe Boots. And definitely, they performed well on their tryouts on the Moc Toe blueprint. Serving different users although using the same image.

Aesthetics

Although the design of both Moc Toe versions is closely the same, you could notice the difference in construction. Truly, both the Thorogood and RedWing Moc Toe boots have eye-catching designs.

The leather on the RedWing Moc Toe and Thorogood version is oil-tanned. At last, they have something in common.

Thorogood uses the Goodyear Welt Construction and fine stitches giving it extra detailing. Whereas, the construction on the RedWing Moc Toe signifies that it’s better viewed as an everyday walking boot.

Material

At first glance, you would certainly agree that Thorogood Moc Toe won the case in this aspect. The leather used to manufacture the Thorogood Moc Toe is tanned to perfection, stylish, and indeed strong.

It’s a lot thicker and heavier than the Redwing version. Although they do break in after a couple of times being used, it becomes comfortable with time.

While the Thorogood Moc Toe features a removable dual-density shock-absorbing insole, the RedWing version doesn’t have much of an insole. It’s basic and comfortable if you are not into the idea of an extra layer.

Sole

RedWing became lazy producing a standard rubber outsole. Ultimately, Thorogood went ahead to develop the polyurethane, durable, oil and slip-resistant rubber outsole. Although the Red Wing Moc Toe sole offers good traction, it tends to wear out quickly and in no time will require replacement.

Price

Surprisingly a pair of RedWing’s Moc Toe Boots costs $270 to $349 and the Thorogood version cost between $214 – $285.

At this point, one tends to wonder how Thorogood managed to produce high-quality boots and offer them at a cheap rate. The Thorogood Moc Toe boots are truly worth every dollar. Then we take a look at RedWing Moc Toe boots and the reverse is the case.

Is Danner Boots Better Than Thorogood Boots?

By now, you should already know the features of Thorogood Boots. What’s left now is to state the facts about Danner Boots and allow you to be the judge.

Looks and Comfort

Danner boots offer exquisite boot designs. They are perfect to make you look stylish and keep you comfortable and secure.

No matter the attire you decide to put on, a pair of Danner boots will surely complement your style. As for comfort, these boots offer them at a wonderful rate. Although the leather is hard and might take a while for your feet to get used to.

Sole

Danner boots feature an ortho-lite footbed as an insole. It has great shock absorption that protects your feet from consistent impact.

Underneath is a lightweight soft wedge outsole that offers traction on most surfaces. Unfortunately, the outsole doesn’t last long and requires effort to re-sole.

Material and protection

Available in brown and black, Danner boots are made from full-grain oil-tanned leather. Although these boots are beautiful in design, the leather is typically hard and requires a month plus to break in.

Price

Relatively cheap, Danner boots cost approximately $110 – $280 depending on the selected type of footwear of your choice.
